As I earlier reported, this past Saturday was the final leg of principle photography for our short film, “Bath.” We all loaded up Friday evening and hit the road for Columbia. There were some delays and we arrived later than desired, but we got there safely. We wound up socializing for awhile that night and got in “bed” rather late.
5:15am – The alarm clocks (aka cell phones) begin to go off. After roughly three hours of sleep, it’s time to get rolling. By 6:00am we hit the rally point and were off to the set. Unpacking took about an hour and then it was time to dress and set up the first shot. Dressing meant putting on full, real, authentic, US Army issue gear. Mine included a fifty pound radio pack! Needless to say, we were all overdressed for the 100 degree Columbia heat.
By 9:00 we were blocking out the first shot and production was underway. By 9:15, we were all drenched with sweat. The heat was AWFUL!! I cannot believe the strength and stamina of our troops who have to wear this gear daily! We shot until noon and broke for lunch, which was MRE’s (Meals Ready to Eat) – go figure, haha. Yes, we were totally method.
The explosions on set were great and a lot of fun to witness. The heat exhaustion and vomiting was not. But, I love it. The pain and the sacrifice is but a fleeting moment in the process of filmmaking. All in all, it was great. I spent the day with my friends, playing war with guns and real explosions! I mean…come on!
Now, it’s time for post production and we have until September 20th to have it complete and submitted to Sundance for consideration. I’m stoked to see what the gang does with the footage in post. My boy Garrett may be helping with editing and that is great! He’s got a real eye and talent for this process and I believe that will lend a real sense of professionalism to the project.
Well, that’s one more project technically in the can, so it’s time to switch gears and start planning the next one. I’m so grateful that I get to do this! Granted I’m not getting paid for any of this…yet…but, this is what I love! And the fact that God has blessed me with the means to do what I love is just amazing! Life is great and it’s getting better!!
