Living in the valley of a Mountainous Molehill.

A mountainous molehill casts it shadow over me.

That sounds weird and you may not really understand why.

We’ve all heard the saying of “making a mountain out of a molehill,” and I’m sure we can all relate. I know I have let little nothing situations in my life and relationships get way out of hand to the point that I’m making a big deal over absolutely nothing. Making a mountain out of a molehill.

This is a little different. Lately when I try to reach out to people about things that are bothering me, of course they want to know what things. It’s then that I realize, there are a couple big issues, but for the most part, there’s just a mountain of little ones. I often times can’t even put a finger on the details. I’m sure that, often times, I sound like a bumbling idiot. I’m facing a mountainous molehill.

Have you ever felt like that? It’s so hard to see the problems due to the conundrum. (Another play on an old saying – “It’s hard to see the forest for all the trees”) We tend to look and the whole mess and forget that it’s just a bunch of smaller problems. The bigger picture is often times daunting to say the least! It’s in times like this, that we should take a step forward and focus on the details – or one problem at a time.

For me, one of the greatest things about life is knowing that I can take anything to God and He’ll somehow, someway, help me with it. It’s probably not going to be an overnight fix or a winning lottery ticket that He blesses me with; sometimes it’s a victory of patience or endurance. Sometimes the greatest reward in the face of adversity is wisdom. If God shows me a way out (and if I go to Him, He always will) of a situation or hardship – if ever faced with that again, I already know the way to victory. That’s awesome!

Proverbs 3:5-6 (New King James Version)

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
6 In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct[a] your paths.

Sure, a lottery jackpot would be flippin’ awesome, but there’s TRULY valuable things in this world that no amount of money can buy.

The answer to life’s troubles isn’t always going to be the answer we want to hear. I’m living proof that trying to force my answer to be truth can lead to even greater quandaries. Most people scoff at the thought of God caring enough to aid us in the “little things” of our lives. Many simply scoff at God caring at all. If God would send Jesus to die the death He died, just so that we could have fellowship with Him, is it impossible to think that He cares about our details?

There’s nothing we face (at the core level) that God didn’t demand of Jesus – dare I say, He endured more than ANY of us will ever be faced with! Look at Matthew 4 and you’ll see great evidence of God placing Jesus in a trying situation (Matthew 4:1), but rewarding Him in the end (Matthew 4:11).

That God is the very same God I serve. He is the very same God you could know. “But Jesus was the Son of God, He got special treatment.” Come on, folks! The Bible says that all that come to know Christ are children of God and that we are privy to the very same blessings Christ was!

Romans 8:15-17 (New International Version)

15For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship.[a] And by him we cry, “Abba,[b] Father.” 16The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. 17Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

Tests and trials aren’t easy, but we all too often view them as negative. I know I do. But with every trial, there is a triumph. With every test, there is a reward. It’s not easy, but I’m trying to adopt a James 2-4 approach to my trials and I urge you to try the same. Thus far, I’m amazed at what He’s willing to touch and bless if I’ll just trust Him.

I think we’ve all been in situations where we cry out, “I can’t handle this!” Maybe it’s time to realize, it’s not that we can’t handle it, it’s that we can’t handle it alone. And there is a God who is more than willing to pick up our slack if we just ask. You may not believe that, but I hope you’ll at least remember that someone said it the next time you stand before your mountainous molehill.

I’m sick of the shadows. One problem at a time, this mountain is being exposed as just another molehill. And the warm sunshine on my face is a welcomed reward.
