It’s a good day in the land of Netflix shipping and receiving. I do love it when this works in my favor.
I think I’ll dedicate a night to watching both of the flicks that are shipping out to me today. I think I’ll even give it a title.
Hot Chicks, Scary Flicks Film-apalooza.
What I’m also excited about with both of these titles is that they both seem to be underdog films. The reviews/ratings just aren’t that favorable. Yet, like with all matters of opinion, a closer look reveals that the opinions are all over the place. People love these flicks, hate these flicks and are otherwise “comme ci, comme ca” about them.
Captivity (2007) – This film directed by Roland Joffe (a man of many great directing credits and accolades – that’s sarcasm) stars Elisha Cuthbert, a favorite of mine (eyes). I recall seeing the trailer at the theaters and being intrigued by it…mostly because of Elisha. I never got around to seeing it, and sadly the fleeting few TV Spots weren’t enough to remind and motivate me to go. Apparently I was not alone.
Based upon the synopsis, this seems like another of (the plethora of) SAW-type cash-in flicks. Our two protagonists awaken in a cellar to find themselves in the clutches of a madman. We’ve all been there and done that. Even in this setting, originality can blossom.
I think, however, in this case, the story may be the reason the film didn’t fair well in theaters. In fact, it tanked with a mere $2,600,000 in US theaters. That’s sad because I’m willing to bank on this film costing upwards of $8M to produce.
Regardless, I’m eager to check this out. I’m expecting little aside from “eye candy” (Elisha) and at least I’ll come away without being let down.
Full report after viewing.
And here’s the one I’m really excited about.
I Know Who Killed Me (2007) – Sony Pictures Entertainment (major motion picture) directorial debut from Chris Sivertson starring Lindsay Lohan.
Now, before I get booed outta my own blog, let me talk this thing out. There’s a few reasons why I wanna see this, but there’s one main reason.
One reason is the story. It sounds interesting. A small town young woman, Aubrey (Lohan), is abducted and tortured by a serial killer. Weeks later, she is found alive but insists she is someone else, Dakota, a character Aubrey created in a story.
I like it. It has that cut-and-dry gloss to it. A clear cut case of post traumatic stress. Right? I’m going to go with not likely. See, Dakota insists that Aubrey is still alive – and in danger.
I’m totally digging that.
Another reason is this: I don’t hate Lindsay Lohan. I know that 92% of the world does, and it’s super cool to hate her, but I do not. In fact, I rather like the girl. Sure she’s done some really stupid crap. Who hasn’t. The girl got swept into the whole teen/twenty-something Hollywood scene with other role model citizens like Paris Hilton and Brandon Davis. It’s an attractive world (to some) and I’m sure the stress of uberCelebrity is tough.
But, I’m giving the girl a break. And, I’m hoping that she’ll turn her life around. Unlike those she hangs out with, she’s actually talented (except, I’m not sure about the singing thing) and attractive. Maybe I’m just holding on to a sinking ship. I’m not opposed to letting go. Just not now.
Now, the main reason. Chris Sivertson. Chris is best friends with a guy I came to know a few years ago, Lucky McKee. Lucky wrote and directed the Sundance sleeper hit, May, and also joined the ranks of the Masters of Horror. So, I’m really wanting to be supportive of this guy. I’m truly hoping that the flack for this film is all just backlash from Lohan’s antics. Despite the fact, the film still garnered nearly $8 million in US theaters. Not a success by any means, but considering the bad press, lack of advertising and small number of screens, it’s not terribly bad.
Here’s to my first (of probably many) Hot Chicks, Scary Flicks Film-apaloozas!
