Mom used to tell me a long time ago when I was listening to Metallica and Pantera – “If it’s not of God, it’s against God.” I always remembered that – and hated it. Everything that was fun and cool was against God – so it seemed. Over the years a lot has changed. Mom has changed. I definitely have changed.
Today I found this passage, and I was shocked by it.
Luke 9:49-50 (ESV)
49John answered, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he does not follow with us.” 50But Jesus said to him, “Do not stop him, for the one who is not against you is for you.”
As one of my previous blog posts shows, Christians spend way too much time worrying about who is doing it right – or maybe even, who is the best at doing it. Ironically, just a few verses earlier, Jesus also had something to say about that.
Is Jesus really saying that anyone not working against us-our cause, our mission, our purpose-is working for us? If the focus is Jesus – does it matter if we don’t attend the same church? Your church has an organ and hymnals and mine has HD projectors and Les Pauls, but Jesus says we are the same.
Isn’t it strangely ironic that Jesus spent an awful lot of time diffusing these petty arguments with His disciples, and yet we still quarrel in the same ways?
I believe we are at a great fault for this – and it is a detriment to the Church as a whole that we quarrel and mock one another while people die every minute outside the Church and go to Hell. All because we’re too busy arguing who is the best!
If Jesus says we’re all on the same team, then why don’t we just start playing the game and let Him be the coach for a change?
